Roosters & Morning Bells is a wonderfully exuberant lotus with a name as lively as its flower. Large, exceptionally full, and richly colored, this bloom has the appearance of a morning celebration in full chorus.

The flower is packed with layers of broad, heavily textured petals in coral, salmon, warm rose, and vivid crimson-pink. The outer petals are deeper and more saturated, while the inner petals reveal glowing peach and apricot tones. Many of the petals curl and twist inward, giving the bloom a wonderfully ruffled, almost sculptural appearance.

At its center is a green-gold seedpod, surrounded by a ring of pale cream stamens. The golden center peeks through the dense petals like a small burst of sunlight, while the surrounding stamens have an almost bell-like delicacy.

What makes this lotus particularly captivating is its rich complexity of form. Some petals stand upright and tightly curled, others sweep outward, and still others fold dramatically back toward the center. It feels less like a perfectly symmetrical flower and more like an exuberant, living bouquet contained within a single lotus.

And the name is delightful. “Roosters & Morning Bells” immediately suggests the sounds of early morning—the rooster announcing the dawn and distant bells marking the beginning of a new day. The flower itself seems to embody that moment: bright, noisy with color, energetic, and gloriously awake. Full of warmth, movement, and exuberant color, Roosters & Morning Bells feels like dawn made into a flower—a cheerful proclamation that the new day has arrived.

How do I fertilize lotus? When do I begin to fertilize lotus?
Wait until the lotus plant has several floating leaves or begins to put up aerial leaves before adding fertilizer. Choose a good fertilizer such as Pondtabbs or Landon’s Aquatic Fertilizer and follow the instructions carefully. The amount of fertilizer to use is usually based on the size of the pot and the amount of soil in the pot. For example, most of the small tablets are added at a ratio of 1-2 tablets per gallon of soil in the pot. Once the lotus has started to grow vigorously tablets can be added every 2-3 weeks. Stop fertilizing in late summer to allow the lotus to use up all the fertilizer in the pot before going dormant. This encourages the lotus to form better rhizomes.
