Hong Shou is a charming miniature lotus that may be small in stature, but it certainly doesn't skimp on flowers! Its wonderfully full blooms are packed with layers upon layers of rich rosy-red and deep pink petals, giving each flower a lush, almost peony-like appearance.
The petals deepen in color toward the outside while the inner petals have beautiful variations of pink, creating an intricate, richly textured bloom. Even the "crown" of petaloids which occasionally develop instead of seeds adds interest, with its unusual green-and-pink coloring tucked into the center of the flower.
One of the things we especially love about Hong Shou is how eager it is to bloom. It is an early-season bloomer, often getting started before many other lotus varieties have even decided it's time to wake up! And once it begins, it blooms frequently, providing a wonderful succession of petite, richly colored flowers.
Because it is a miniature lotus, Hong Shou is an excellent choice for smaller containers and intimate water gardens.
