Jian Ning — Tall, Brilliant, and Generous
Jian Ning is a striking Chinese lotus with a commanding presence, a beautiful variety with something to offer beyond the flower itself.
This is a tall-growing variety, sending its flowers proudly above the surrounding foliage where they can be admired from a distance. The blooms are richly saturated in brilliant pink to magenta, with broad, pointed petals that radiate outward in an elegant star-like form. The petals have beautifully visible veins, giving the flower texture and depth, while the sunlight brings out different shades of pink across their surfaces. The outer petals spread widely, while the inner petals rise more vertically around the center, creating a graceful, architectural form.
At the heart of the flower is a bright golden-yellow seed receptacle, surrounded by a delicate ring of pale stamens. The vivid yellow center provides a wonderful contrast against the intense pink petals and gives the bloom a particularly luminous appearance.
But Jian Ning has another quality that makes it especially interesting to grow: it is valued not only for its beautiful flowers but also for its seeds, which are known for their delicious edible qualities. Thus, Jian Ning combines ornamental beauty with a useful harvest—a lotus that is both stately in the garden and generous in what it produces.
